CWC: Glen Maxwell Records Greatest ODI Innings Vs Afghanistan

An injured Glenn Maxwell scored an unbeaten 201 runs off 128 balls to steer Australia to victory against Afghanistan in a Cricket World Cup Group stage fixture. The Australians chased down a distinguished 291-5 run total from Afghanistan’s innings in Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, India.

Australia initially slumped to 91-7. Chasing Afghanistan’s seemingly imposing 291 runs. But, an injured Maxwell dragged his side to victory after nursing various cramps on the field with a valiant 201 not out, off 128 balls, after he was dropped on 33.

Afghanistan must have felt they had the Aussies on the ropes when captain Pat Cummins walked in after the seventh wicket. However. Glen Maxwell had other ideas and recorded Australia’s highest individual ODI score. And became only the third player to make a World Cup double-century. His innings included 21 fours and 10 sixes and single-handedly won the tie for the Australian faithful.

Earlier. Afghanistan put on an impressive performance with Ibrahim Zadran hitting a sublime 129 not out to make history by becoming his country’s first batter to score a century in a World Cup.

Is this the greatest One Day International batting innings?

“You are probably going to get people saying it is the greatest innings of all time,” former England captain Michael Vaughan said on BBC Test Match Special.

“I’ve never seen anything like that. Australia had no right at all to win that game.” said the former captain.

Maxwell’s historic innings is the first time anyone has made a double century when chasing in a one-day international and the first by a non-opening batter.

“What Glenn Maxwell has done tonight is a miracle,” said TMS commentator Geoff Lemon.

Australia captain Pat Cummins, who contributed 12 in an unbeaten stand of 202 with Maxwell, called it “the greatest ODI innings that’s ever happened”.

A heroic inning indeed! Is Maxwell Australia’s Trump card going into the semi-finals? Time will tell. Smart money will be on the Indians to take keep the trophy at home as they host the tournament. However, the punters will look at Maxwell’s performance and may see real value as the tournament progresses.
