CWC: South Africa Stunned By An Inspired Netherlands

Who would have thought judging from South Africa’s form that they would succumb to minnow nation Netherlands in the 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup group stages? Following two impressive wins vs Sri Lanka and Australia the Proteas fell short to a relatively modest 245-run chase, losing by 38 runs.

The Netherlands team with a few South African expats shocked tournament favourites bowling out the Proteas for 207. Their captain Scott Edwards scored an unbeaten78 runs with the peek of their bowlers being Logan Van Beek with 3/60 in 9 overs.

The win keeps the Dutch dream alive as a defeat would have meant a third straight defeat almost shutting the door on a semi-final slot. The win means the Netherlands bag their first two points of the tournament after three matches. They play a weakened Sri Lankan side in their fourth match on Saturday, October 21.

Meanwhile, South Africa remains on four points after three matches. Their next match is against Bangladesh on Tuesday, October 24.
