AFCON 2024: Senegal Win and Egypt Held By Mozambique

One could say that it’s been a highly contested Africa Cup of Nations, as wins have been hard to come by. Having covered seven games so far. There have been four draws in the tournament. And punters maybe peaked by the fact that each game has had 2 or more goals. The usual suspects have opened their account on the goal scoring charts including Osimhen and Salah barring Sadio Mane who only registered an assist in his side’s 3-0 win over Gambia.

Egypt were surprisingly held to a 1-1 draw by Mozambique’s minnows. Which makes for interesting reading in the group as Cape Verde top with a galvanizing 2-1 win over Ghana. Ghana to be fair look a pale shadow of themselves and the next rounds’ results maybe  definitive as they take on the Pharaoh’s of Egypt.

HIGHLIGHTS | Cameroon 🆚 Guinea #TotalEnergiesAFCON2023 - MD1 Group C

Manchester United’s Andre Onana who missed his side’s(Cameroun) first match against Guinea (1-1) in favour of playing for his club, will be available for their next competitive tie against group leaders Senegal. Senegal, who recorded the largest win in the tournament so far beating Gambia 3-0, will look to secure progression against Onana’s Cameroun in a highly contested group where Guinea also have a strong chance of qualifying.

Tournament football will always be a cagey affair and I would expect more draws and a dramatic last round. Whether Onana will rue missing the first match is still up in the balance. But there is a lot of football still to come. South Africa, Burkina Faso and Tunisia get in on the action today in some interesting ties. However, nothing will be decided as yet as things are slowly heating up.
