Super Rugby Pasifika: Semi-Final Round-up 17.06.2023

The Canterbury Crusader hoodoo over The Blues worked its magic once more as the Canterbury outfit put the Aucklanders to the sword with a blowout 52 – 15 win. In a not-so-open challenge in Hamilton, the Chiefs needed a last-ditch try from veteran Brodie Rettalick to secure passage in the other Super Rugby Pasifika semi-final against the Brumbies.

Scott Robertson’s Crusaders shined once more and dominated the Blues in a game where the latter failed to get going. Richie Mounga stamped his place in Ian Foster’s squad and has left the manager with no other choice but to start him in the upcoming Rugby Championship team to play South Africa, Australia, and Argentina. Richie controlled much of the game and had the Crusaders dominate much of the game and will be crucial in the final in Hamilton on the weekend. The Blues will be hugely disappointed as they failed to turn up and went down with a whimper.

The Chiefs continued their rich vein of form with a professional semi-final performance against Australia’s best. Damian Mckenzie had another stellar performance vs the Brumbies which will make Ian Foster’s job very difficult with regard to whether he gets to start and at what position for the All Blacks come Rugby Championship time.

With another all-New Zealand final on the cards, I am sure everyone bar the Crusader faithful will want the Chiefs to win. With an opportunity to play in front of their home fans, the Chiefs go into the final as slight favourites having finished the league on top of the table. The Blues failed to get over the line last season with a home final vs the Crusaders, however, the Chiefs propose a different challenge this year.

It’s the end of an era for the Crusader’s Manager Scott Robertson, who moves on to the All Blacks next season. The Crusaders play in their 6th final and will look to give Robertson a clean sweep in terms of Super Rugby finals since 2017. The Chiefs have a huge task to get over the line and confidence in the camp should be sky high. However, the Crusaders are a tough proposition come finals rugby and I am forced to back Scott Robertson and his side once more for the win. Pick – Crusaders win
